On Saturday, September 28th, 2024, Dominica witnessed a historic milestone with its first-ever Independence Parade, organized by the Cultural Division. The vibrant procession, starting from Goodwill Road and culminating on the Roseau Promenade, brought the streets of Roseau to life in a spectacular celebration of the island's rich cultural heritage. This landmark event marked a new and exciting chapter in Dominica's Independence celebrations, captivating both locals and visitors alike.

Earlson Matthew, the Acting Chief Cultural Officer and key organizer, explained the inspiration behind the parade: "We wanted to create a fresh, innovative event that could truly capture the people's attention and showcase Dominica's vibrant culture." Matthew's vision was realized as the parade featured a diverse array of cultural performers, including Kalinago dancers, stilt walkers, jing ping bands, steel pan players, and primary school students in traditional wear.

Hon. Melissa Skerrit, Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central, expressed her pride in the Cultural Division's efforts and expressed hope for the parade to become an annual tradition. She praised the organizers for their success and expressed her willingness to collaborate on future events.

The parade was a musical extravaganza, with Bouyon sensations Signal Band and Shelly electrifying the crowd with their dynamic performances. Their energetic rhythms added a layer of excitement, blending modern Bouyon beats with the traditional sounds of Dominica's culture.

The Independence Parade was more than just an event; it was a vibrant display of Dominica's rich cultural fabric. Kalinago performers, stilt walkers, jing ping bands, and steel pan musicians showcased the island's diverse heritage, reflecting both its indigenous and African roots. The parade marked the official start of Dominica's 46th Independence Season, celebrated under the theme "Péyi Nou, Kado Nou" (Our Country, Our Gift).

The success of this inaugural parade is a testament to the creativity and resilience of the Dominican people as they march toward many vibrant years of independence. It lays the foundation for an even grander tradition in the years to come, symbolizing the unity and pride of Dominica's people as they celebrate their country's history and progress.
